EVENT RECAPS
September 24 2022 AZ NCRS Chapter Social Event - Rim Country BBQ - Payson, AZ
Assistance in organizing and managing the event came from Greg MaGill, Gary Craig and Garry Mion. The NCRS membership was invited to join us for a “Corvette Caravan from We-Ko-Pa, a Guest Speaker from GM Presentation and Lunch” at RIM Country BBQ in Payson, AZ on Saturday, September 24th.
Karsten Garbe, Global Vice President of Pre-Production Vehicles & Equipment was our guest speaker, and we received a lot of positive comments about Karsten during and after the event. I counted 49 people for lunch and Karsten appreciated the invitation to speak to us and he loved our members and the event.
From a Board perspective, Garry Mion, Gary Craig, David Peterson, Loren Peterson, Ron Coleman, Greg MaGill and Tom McGowan were in attendance. Paul and Brad were traveling that weekend.
I’ve included a few pictures as follows and you’ll note that Garry opened the meeting by introducing Karsten and then reviewing a few Chapter items. From there you’ll note that Karsten reviewed a number of slides of great interest to us.
I’d like to thank everyone that attended for making it a terrific event.
All the best,
Tom
June 18 2022 Judging School - Paul Morel’s Garage
We met at Paul Morel’s house / garage for June’s AZ NCRS Judging School.
The topic was “Standard Deductions”, which we discussed in great detail. Paul provided the new NCRS Standard Deductions list.
I don’t have a copy of the attendee list, but it was well attended.
From a Board perspective, Garry Mion, Gary Craig, David Peterson, Greg MaGill and Tom McGowan were in attendance.
Paul was a very gracious host, had snacks and drinks for everyone and his garage is one very nice “Man Cave”.
All the best,
Tom
April 10 2021 Arizona Chapter NCRS Road Trip 2.0 - Bartlett Lake
The Arizona NCRS Chapter held our annual driving event two years after the preceding event. Last year’s event was cancelled due to Covid 19 but since most everyone is now vaccinated, we decided to go ahead April 10. The drive commenced with 11 Corvettes at We Ko Pa Resort in Fountain Hills and proceeded Northbound through the town along the lake until an unexpected local art fair closed the main road and caused an unplanned detour. Fortunately, our fearless leader, Phil D’alessandro being a local resident, rescued us and expertly led us out of town with minimal disruption. We continued on to an interim stop at Alpio’s at Troon where the monthly Cars and Coffee event was in progress. Even though we arrived after prime time there were still plenty of great cars to observe, lots of Vettes included, especially multiple C8s. As usual Alpio’s display area was filled with cars and mementos from his collection. Seven more Corvettes joined our group at this point so when we departed there were 18 Corvettes of all age groups and more than 30 participants.
After that enjoyable interlude we ventured Northeast out to Bartlett Lake. The last 12 miles of the journey were on the Bartlett Lake road, a winding and hilly challenge to vehicles but with great views and the sense of being out of the large metropolitan area. No doubt this was everyone’s favorite portion of the day. Upon arrival at Bartlett Lake we parked together at the only eating establishment for miles. The Cove Restaurant had prepared for our arrival by arranging a long table where we could be together along with a special menu. Considering our numbers and many other guests to include a group of Harley enthusiasts the wait staff was somewhat overwhelmed but managed to take care of all of us. The weather cooperated so we all were outside in the shade and enjoyed a commanding view of Bartlett Lake. This event was the first time the club has had a chance to be together in a social atmosphere in over a year. Overall, it appears to have been a big success.
March 13 2020 Spring Flight Judging Event - Barret Jackson Showroom
On March 13 & 14th, the Arizona NCRS Chapter held another very successful Spring Chapter Judging Meet. Six cars were judged, four for Flight judging and two for Concours judging at the Chapter level. The Concours cars were a beautiful stock class 1959 black Corvette and a sharp looking modified class 1968 Corvette with sidepipes.
4 Corvettes were entered in the Sportsman Display class. 55 members participated in the Chapter Meet on Saturday.
This event was the first for Arizona in that this was a 5 judging point event.
February 15 2020 Tech Session - Garry Mion's Restoration Project - Gilbert AZ, Garry's Shop
On February 15, the Arizona Chapter held a combined judging school/technical session regarding C1 Chassis and Body Paint. The event was held at Garry Mion’s garage where we had a chance to see the frame separated from the body.
Garry went over the various techniques used during the restoration of his 1960 Corvette on the chassis and underbody areas, showing paint overspray techniques, paint application techniques and many other smaller detailed items.
Thanks Garry for sharing your project with us.
January 25 2020 Judging School - ECL Codes - Fountain Hills Community Center
On January 25, the Arizona Chapter held a judging school in Fountain Hills regarding ELC Codes What They Mean and How to Use During Judging.
The Judging School went over the 1963 thru 1967 Corvettes on what ECL Codes identify on options for the St. Louis manufactured bodies.
Thanks to Bill Calorico for this presentation.

Happy Holidays!

On November 23, the Arizona Chapter held a combined event, a Technical Session regarding Diagnosing and Repairing C2 Trailing Arms and a Judging School regarding C2 Chassis. This event was held at our Judging Chairman’s garage where we had the chance to see David Peterson’s 1966 Duntov award winner car up on a 2 post lift so the whole underside chassis was visible for our members.
October 18 2019 Flight Judging - Barrett-Jackson Collection Dealership
On October 18 & 19th, the Arizona NCRS Chapter held another very successful Fall Chapter Judging Meet. Six total cars were judged, five for Flight judging and our very first Concours judging at the Chapter level, a beautiful 1964 red Corvette. April 20 2019 Drive to Kohl's Ranch in Payson for lunch - WeKoPa Resort to Kohl's Ranch in Payson
April 20, 2019, dawned a beautiful day just perfect for a drive in a Corvette. We met at We Ko Pa Resort on the Beeline Highway to begin our adventure to Kohl’s Ranch located 17 miles East of Payson just below the Mogollon Rim. Eighteen Corvettes and two non-Corvettes met in the parking lot for the 70 mile drive. We were joined by one more member driving a Corvette in Payson so it was a great turnout. The tall pine trees, cool mountain air, clear blue skies, and the log buildings of the old “ranch” only added to the atmosphere. Thirty nine Corvette aficionados sat together in the dining room talking about what else!! Corvettes!
March 8 2019 Chapter Flight Judging Event - Barrett-Jackson Showroom
On March 8 and 9th, the Arizona NCRS Chapter held a very successful 2019 Spring Judging School and Judging Meet. On March 8th, the Judging School was attended by twenty one members with a lively discussion regarding Judging Etiquette – Do’s and Don’ts which was very apropos to the Judging Event the following day. Seven cars were Flight Judged, 5 were awarded Top Flight and 2 were awarded Second Flight. The area in front of the Barrett-Jackson facility was full of very nice Corvettes, see pictures.
December 9 2018 Social Gathering - Casino Arizona in Scottsdale

September 22 2018 Chapter Meeting, Tech Session and Parts Exchange - Van Chevrolet
On Saturday, September 22, the Chapter held a "TECH SESSION" on the Rochester fuel injection system at Van Chevrolet. John Marsh, the Chapter "expert" on this topic, led the discussion. What a complex system! After a short Chapter meeting, the chapter hosted a "parts exchange" where members were able to sell some of their un-used Corvette parts. A great time was had by all!
July 15 2018 2018 National Event - Las Vegas, NV

Follow this link for a full slideshow of the event.
June 16 2018 Judging School - Barrett Jackson Showroom
On June 16, the Arizona Chapter held a chapter meeting and judging school discussing usage of CDCIF on a 1969 Corvette. The judging school was held at the Barrett-Jackson Collection Showroom in Scottsdale. Even though the day started with the first major rain of 2018, the school was well attended by 21 members. At the chapter meeting, Dave Talley thanked Pete Bergmann for the years of service as the Chapter Judging Chairman and announced Pete’s replacement – Gary Craig. After the chapter meeting, the members then spread around the 69 Shark and table with representative parts and discussed the various seeded fault items that were presented.
This was followed by a very good discussion on the usage of CDCIF on the presented items as compared to how they were scored at the 2015 Arizona Regional. The discussions were lively and everyone looked like they enjoyed the school.
May 16 2018 Arizona Regional Judging Meet - We-Ko-Pa Resort
The 2018 Arizona Regional was held May 16-19 at the We-Ko-Pa resort in Fountain Hills, Arizona and was a huge success. Everyone loved the welcome reception dinner on Thursday night (lots of good food and drinks) and the all-you-can-eat $10 lobster dinner on Friday night. There were 172 families and 62 Corvettes that attended the Regional. The weather was good, not too hot, less than 100 degrees… we’ll take it!
Garry Mion and his crew made the job of pushing the cars in and out of the We-Ko-Pa ballroom look easy. There was no backup of cars at the entry ramp and after the judging was complete, the Ballroom was cleared in only 34 minutes with plenty of time to setup for the awards banquet.
We could not have had such a successful Regional without our volunteers at registration and photos as well as the fabulous Tabulators. Oh, and of course, we couldn’t have a Regional without all of our judging teams and team leaders. Thank you all for your time and efforts.
We had 6 of 7 cars pass the dreaded Performance Verification test. Friday and Saturday were busy days with 25 cars judged on Friday and 14 cars judged on Saturday.
We were well represented by Arizona Chapter members at this Regional with 18 Corvettes entered.

The members attending also won recognition as new Duntov award winners, Master Judges, "300 Level" Master Judge and Founder Award recipient. Overall, the chapter distinguished itself at this event.
June 17 2017 Flight Judging Unrestored, Original Corvettes
It seems that the majority of Corvettes we typically encounter during Flight Judging have undergone some degree of restoration from "mild" to "body-off/extensive". We are usually dealing with new paint, shiny replacement parts and glistening chrome. The judging process is fairly straight-forward in these situations. However, if we encounter an unrestored original car, Flight Judging can become more challenging especially in assessing the aspects of "condition". Garry Mion will be hosting this judging school with input from Pete Bergmann and Gary Craig. He will be using his original, 2-Star 1966 roadster as the discussion example for this session.
April 29 2017 Road Tour to Payson
We had 25 people in attendance, 13 Corvettes and a few folks driving non-Corvette "modern iron". The C2's led the procession of Corvettes up AZ Highway 87 followed by the newer models with the C7's bringing up the rear..... There were a lot of smiles and "thumbs up" from the people we passed as we tooled up the 60 miles to the Buffalo Chip cafe in Payson. Everyone made it - no breakdowns, no over-heating and no drama.... just nice, easy cruising. The food and the service at the Buffalo Chip was really good. Rumor has it that the Bison Burgers were outstanding. Thanks to JR Richards for taking the time to organize this!
March 25 2017 Spring Chapter Judging Event - Scottsdale AZ

The location is convenient to much of our membership prompting the strong turnout for the event. We had great weather, great cars, great food and a great time was had "by all"....!

Some scenes from the 2016 Holiday Brunch and Annual Meeting. 45 members in attendance and a great time was had by all! The Chapter also collected food donations for a Scottsdale-area food pantry. Over 100 items of non-perishable food was collected from the membership.
